LEEP-conization

Conisation is a minor surgical procedure in which a cone-shaped piece of tissue is removed from the outer cervix (cervix). This is usually done using an electrical loop (LEEP = Loop electrical excision procedure). The procedure can usually be performed on an outpatient basis.

Conisation may be necessary if abnormal cell changes are detected during cervical screening. This may be a preliminary stage or an early stage of cervical cancer. Further examinations are then necessary: The outer cervix is examined using a special microscope (colposcope) and tissue samples (biopsies) are taken from conspicuous areas. Depending on the findings, conisation or further checks are recommended. The procedure serves to completely remove the altered tissue and thus bring about healing. The removed tissue is then analysed in the laboratory.

After conisation, the tissue needs around four to six weeks to heal completely. During this time, the mucous membrane regenerates and the wound closes.

We will discuss all the details with you before the procedure and will also be available afterwards to answer your questions and provide aftercare.
